Grab a Crayon, Detroit! National Coloring Day Is About to Get COLORFUL! 🌈🖍️
What happens when you fill the Southfield Public Library with crayons, coloring walls, local artists, families, scavenger hunts, and a whole lot of creativity?
You get The Coloring Museum’s National Coloring Day Celebration! 🎨🌈
On September 14 from 4:00–7:30 PM, The Coloring Museum is taking over the Southfield Public Library atrium for a FREE, family-friendly celebration of creativity, community, local artists, and—of course—COLOR!
And when we say free, we mean it. Grab a crayon, choose an activity, and COLOR.
Whether you’re 5, 45, or 95, an experienced artist or someone who hasn't touched a crayon since elementary school, there’s a place for you at our coloring table.
🖍️ So… What Are We Coloring?
The better question might be: What AREN'T we coloring?! 😂
Throughout the library, guests will have opportunities to explore several hands-on creative experiences from The Coloring Museum.
The Coloring Walls invite the community to work together on oversized illustrations, adding a little color at a time until hundreds of individual choices become one collaborative piece of artwork.
Coloring Table Runners turn an ordinary table into a giant coloring page. Grab a seat, meet somebody new, and add your color to the conversation.
Prefer something you can call your own? Stop by our Coloring Sheet stations, choose an illustration, and make it yours.
And then there’s our Mosaic Coloring Mural! 🧩 Guests will color individual pieces of an illustration without necessarily seeing how the entire picture comes together. Piece by piece, those individual creations will become something much bigger—a colorful reminder of what can happen when a community creates together.

🎨 Meet the Artists Making Detroit More Colorful
National Coloring Day isn't only about giving our community access to art. It's also about introducing the community to the people who create it.
The Coloring Museum is proud to welcome a diverse group of Featured Artists whose practices span illustration, watercolor, murals, mixed media, community design, edible art, and more.
Keirsten Johnson of Kookies by Keirsten is bringing creativity into the tastiest medium of all—COOKIES! 🍪 Her signature DIY Kookie Kits allow participants to use a food-safe color palette and paintbrush to transform freshly baked cookies into edible works of art.
Sarah Stanley finds beauty and meaning in everyday objects, beloved pets, recycled materials, and the imperfect little details that make our stories human. Her multidisciplinary practice reminds us that art can be playful, sentimental, sustainable, and wonderfully imperfect.
Victoria Bayagich of Watercolor Connections will bring portraiture directly to the community. A Detroit-based figurative and portrait artist, Victoria creates watercolor portraits rooted in true likeness and representation. During National Coloring Day, she and fellow artists will offer donation-based live watercolor portraits for guests of all ages.
Trae IsAAc brings bold color, intricate linework, floral elements, and stained-glass-inspired compositions to spaces throughout Detroit. Art became a therapeutic outlet for Trae during some of the most difficult experiences of his life, and today community participation and youth engagement are central to his practice. Guests will get to experience that collaborative spirit through his interactive art activity.
Leah Thompson of Drawn to Detroit celebrates the architecture and character of the city through freehand illustration. What began as a creative outlet while studying Art Therapy at Wayne State University became a deeply personal way to slow down, reconnect, and discover Detroit through drawing.
Dr. Chanel Beebe of Beebe Arts LLC moves between art, education, research, technology, and community-centered design. Her practice explores creativity as a tool for connection and healing, grounded in a belief we share wholeheartedly at The Coloring Museum: color, craft, and wellbeing belong together.
And we're excited to welcome Dave Chow, a Detroit-area illustrator whose career has crossed some of the city's most recognizable industries—cars, music, advertising, entertainment, comics, and education. A longtime former Illustration instructor at the College for Creative Studies, Dave is passionate about encouraging young people to explore visual art as a lifelong creative career.
And finally... somebody has to be the Head Crayon in Charge. 😂🖍️
The Coloring Museum's founder, illustrator Sherrié Savage, will also join the Featured Artist lineup, sharing the creative practice and personal belief in art's ability to support wellness that ultimately inspired The Coloring Museum itself.
Together, these artists demonstrate something we want our community—especially young people—to see firsthand:

Because creativity shouldn't feel like a luxury.
The Coloring Museum believes that something as simple as sitting down with a box of crayons can give us an opportunity to slow down, connect with one another, express ourselves, play, and reconnect with parts of ourselves we sometimes forget about.
That's why our mission is to make creative healing as accessible as a box of crayons.
National Coloring Day gives us an opportunity to put that mission into action.
There is no pressure to create a masterpiece. There are no grades. You don't have to know how to draw. And nobody is going to tell you that the sky can't be purple.
You just have to show up and COLOR. 🌈

While the community coloring activities are free, guests will also have opportunities to support our Featured Artists and purchase artwork and creative products.
The Coloring Museum will have colorful merchandise available too, including interactive products that you can take home—or start creating with right at the event.
Supporting local artists is an important part of The Coloring Museum's mission. We don't only want you to see their artwork; we want you to learn their names, discover their businesses, hear their stories, and continue supporting them after National Coloring Day is over.

National Coloring Day isn't really about crayons.
It's about what can happen around the crayons.
A child discovers an artist who looks like them. An adult colors for the first time in 30 years. A family sits at a table and creates together. A local artist meets a new customer. Two strangers work on the same Coloring Wall. Hundreds of individually colored pieces eventually become one picture.
That's the colorful community we're trying to create.
So bring the kids. Bring Grandma. Bring your best friend. Bring your neighbor. Bring your inner child.
